PgDn - Exit edit mode and save the record.
Return/Enter - Goto next row at first column if in overstrike. If in
insert mode, break line at cursor and add right of
cursor to beginning of next line.
Tab - In overstrike mode, tab to next tab position. Insert
mode, move text under and after cursor to next tab
position. Tabs are modulo eight.
Ctrl - A - Start to mark text for copy or cut, use cursor keys
to mark end of text.
Plus + - Copy text that is marked.
Minus - - Cut text that is marked.
Ctrl - P - Paste text that was copied or cut at cursor position.
You can copy or cut text from one record and paste it
in another.

At Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp., where I work, you have to prefix
an outside the plant number with 9. Another man wanted a delay
after the exit code where the exit code gets him through the
switch board to the outside phone company. Enter the exit code
and then commas for the number of two second delays you want,
I. E. "9,,,," would give four seconds delay between the exit code
and the number to be dialed. Phone #3 is dialed as entered in the
field, "Plant Exit Codes" and "Dial One" are not added. Text
characters are ignored.

If you start Cardx by entering just CARDX on the DOS command
line, you will be presented with the default setting screen. If
you press enter, the default Cardx datafile will be loaded.

Amount of time to dial the phone. Enter Ten seconds for touch
tone and twenty secords for rotary pulse dialing and then
experiment to get the shortest time and still dial the number.

Hangs up the phone before or after the "Do you want to add the
record to the phone log?" message after dialing.
Rolodex cards are sorted on the last name, first name and birth
date. If you are using "First and last name fields" = Y then the
sort key is "MCHENRY, HOWARD L.470623" where the numbers at the end
is the birth date by yr/mo/da. If "First and last name fields" = N
then the combined name field is trimmed of trailing spaces and the
birth date is added in the same way.
When starting CARDX, enter the asterisk wildcards on the command
line, I.E. CARDX *.*, CARDX will provide a menu of your data files
to choose from using the cursor keys. To load a menu from another
disk or directory, enter on the command line CARDX <full path and
wildcards, (d:\path\*.*)>. To load a datafile from another disk or
directory, enter on the command line CARDX <full path and datafile
name, (d:\path\filename).
Command line option "/NOCOM", will not allow the modem to be
accessed. A LAN administrator asked for this feature where in some
cases he did not want the people on the LAN to have the ability to
access a modem, I. E. CARDX *.* /NOCOM, CARDX <filename> /NOCOM or
CARDX /NOCOM. When the feature is in place, attempting to dial give
the message "Dial Feature Is Not Available".
The Phone Log records numbers when they are dialed, you are prompted
if you want the record added to the phone log.
To create a new datafile, (M)ark a record and (T)ransfer it to the
new datafile name. You will be prompted, "Data file doesn't exist,
do you want to create it?....", answer "Y".
Quick Search, ALT - Any Letter Key will find the first record that
starts with that character.
F4 search, enter "Smith, An" to find Andy Smith of 23 Smiths.
(S)earch database for a word or phrase. You will be prompted if
you want to mark the records as they're found. After the search the
marked records can be printed or transferred to another database.
All fields of the record are searched.
Converting files from version 8.1, 8.6, 8.7, 9.6 or 9.8 to 12.3,
copy CONVERT.EXE into the directory where CARDX.EXE is located and
databases of an older version will automatically be converted when
loading a database.
The F1 key configures the screen colors. Use PgUp / PgDn or Enter
keys to change screen color areas. Use Up / Down Cursor keys to
change colors. Press the ESC key to exit the Color Set-up.
The number of records Cardx can access is approximately 14,000. The
larger the database, greater the number of records, the slower the
program is at loading, sorting and saving. Break your database into
smaller files for different groups to speed things up.
To password protect a file use the Alt - F10 keys to add a password.
To remove a password strike the Enter key when change password is
selected from the rolodex screen. Suggest you back-up your file
without a password in case you forget the password.
To transfer records to a new or another database, first mark the
records you want to transfer and select Transfer from the menu and
follow the prompts. Be sure that the destination database has been
converted to the current version of Cardx.
There is nine lines to the Added Information field. Only five of
the lines are normally displayed, the entire field can be viewed by
pressing the left arrow key. Pressing the right arrow key returns
the display to the normal. Blinking arrows on both sides of the
window indicate that there is data in the hidden lines six to nine.
The entire window is used when editing the field.
Return Address file and management program. Select Return
Addresses from a menu, Add, Delete, Edit and Select addresses.
Select "R" when the main window is on screen. When selecting F9 or
F10 to print, the current return address is displayed in a window on
the upper left of the screen.
Access the on screen Calendar by pressing the F7 key anywhere in
the program.
Appointment Manager, appointments are tied to a database and
database record. Press "P" with the main card up to Add, Delete,
Edit and Select appointments. Records with an appointment display
the name field blinking red. If there are appointments in a database
they are displayed before the database is loaded.
Back-up the database in use. Press the "K" key to enter the
back-up screen. Enter path (drive and directory), i. e.
"D:\BACKUPS\CARDX". The program will supply the filename. Press the
Escape key to exit.
Use CARDX.ICO icon for MS Windows. Run as a Non-Windows applicatio
________________________Custom Print Features________________________
Select and edit a "Custom Print Program" by entering F9 or F10 and
select "Select Print Program". A menu will be provided of all the
custom print programs in the directory, *.PRT files. After a
selection is made, the program will prompt you if you want to edit
the file, type "Y" to edit, press the PgDn key to exit and save. If
changes are made to the print program, on save and exit you will
have the opportunity to create a new file, enter a new print program
filename.

DO() = 3 X 11 self stick labels or side by side fan fold labels.
ENDDO = End of DO command.
HEADER = Print a Header on each page in a DO loop.
TRIM(n) = Text of a record is trimmed to (n) length.
ADINFO = Print all non blank lines.
ADINFO9 = will print all nine lines of the added information field.
ADINFO1 to ADINFO8 ignors blank lines to print as much of the
information as possible in the number of lines specified. If the
number of lines printed is less than the number specified then blank
lines are printed to total the number specified to provide even
spacing of records printed on a page.

pound sign. #027 &l7.5C#, numbers and text must be delimited by a
space. These can be embedded between variables or text.
Row and column coordinates place a variable at that location from
the top and left edge of the paper. The first number is regarded
as the row number and any numbers there after are column numbers
in that line.
'Text' to be printed is enclosed in quotes. Your Return Address
can be positioned on the medium this way.
Text and variables can be mixed in a line by separating them with
a space. The space delimits all commands.
;All text in a line after a semicolon is ignored as a comment.
FORMFEED = a form feed is printed after this command.
FORMFEED? = You are prompted if you want a form feed when only
printing a single record. It is ignored when printing all of the
database or marked records.
FORMFEED! = Do a formfeed after last record is printed, eject
last page.
TRIM(n) trims all text of a record to the number specified after the
command is issued.
DO loops allows you to print a record format across and down a page.
DO(Down, Across #1, Across #2, -------->, Right margin)

DO(00, 10, 40, 79) prints fan fold continuous form side by side
labels. ENDDO must be used to terminate the DO loop.
DO(10, 01, 29, 57, 79) prints 3 X 11 self adhesive labels, last
three labels at the bottom of the page are left blank for LaserJet
printer. ENDDO must be used to terminate the DO loop.
DO(PHONBOOK, #1, #2, #Enable underline#, #Disable underline#)
prints a phone book from the database, #1 is the number of lines on
a page. #2 is the number of columns accross the page. Then printer
escape codes for set and reset underline. The more columns across
determines if one, two or all three phone numbers are included in
the phone book. ENDDO must be used to terminate the DO loop.
REP(10, 02, 35, 69, 95), REPeat prints a 3 X 11 adhesive backed
label sheet with all labels of the same record. ENDREP must be
used to terminate the REPeat loop.
HEADER prints a Header at the top of each page when using DO loops.
The right margin number of a DO loop is used to center the Header.
HEADER CDATE ' ' TIME ;will print the date and time at the top of
each page.
MERGE.EXE, merges two Cardx databases to another separate
database. Separates duplicate records and appends them to a another
trash database. The records with the greatest amount of data in it
is retained in the merge database. A choice of comparing the first
and last names or all of the record except the Added Information
field. Choosing "names" gives a database with unique records.
MERGE.EXE should be in the directory with your database files.
Enter MERGE on the command line and follow the prompts. Sort and
Save each of the databases to be combined before running Merge.
Mouse control:
Generally the left button is used to point and select or is
(Y)es in a Yes/No question. The right button will escape from a
menu and is (N)o in a Yes/No question. In the row type menus a
left click on the top or bottom bar will do a PgUp or PgDn. Using
the left button to point and select in the phone log will mark
records to be deleted, right button to escape from the log. In the
card screen pointing the up or down arrows on the handles will
select the next or previous card for display. Left handle shows
all of Added Information field and right handle shows a normal
diplay. Also the NEXT/PREV words at bottom left of the screen will
do the same. Pointing the words PgUp/PgDn at the bottom of the
screen will do what they say. Pointing D/E/F will dial one of the
three phone numbers. Pointing HOME at the bottom of the screen will
display the first record of the database. Point Esc EXIT at the
lower right of the screen to exit the program. Point to select with
the left button in the Lotus type F10 print menu and press the right
button to escape. The mouse is not used in any editing.
